Children at a school in Dundee, Scotland helped test the new Dare to be Digital games yesterday (Friday 15th July) at the University of Abertay Dundee, playing prototype games on Xbox Kinect, iPads, mobile phones, PCs and more- ahead of the Dare ProtoPlay festival sponsored by Intel.
The world-leading game design competition Dare to be Digital challenge attracts university students from across the globe to Dundee to build a new game in just nine weeks, with the best game taking home a BAFTA.
After weeks of hard work and mentoring from industry professionals Blitz Games Studios, Cobra Mobile, Codemasters, Crytek, Jagex, Outplay Entertainment and Rockstar North, the school children get to play the rough versions of the games, giving the teams valuable information about how the public react to their games.
The game testing marks the half-way point of the international game design contest, with everything building towards putting the games on show at the free Dare ProtoPlay computer games festival on Friday 12th-Sunday 14th August in Dundee’s Caird Hall.
Elaine Russell, Dare to be Digital project manager, said: “Building a game in just nine weeks is an incredibly really challenging process, and today’s input from the school children is really important.
"Seeing how members of the public react to your game – whether they understand it, how much fun they have, and any problems they come across – is a really important step in development. All the teams have to get their games finished for the Dare ProtoPlay games festival opening on August 12th in Dundee, so hearing the children’s feedback and seeing how much they enjoyed the games is a real boost!"
Taking place over three days in Dundee’s Caird Hall (Friday 12th-Sunday 14th August), Dare ProtoPlay is Scotland’s biggest computer games festival.
The hugely exciting event has something for everyone – from toddlers and teenagers to grandparents and games developers.
As well as the 15 Dare to be Digital games, there will be a professional gamer tournament run on high-end Intel machines, game jams with professionals and kids building new games from scratch, games industry talks, and a showcase of the latest games from development studios across the UK.
