Ludum Dare 22 winners unveiled

Written by Thanasis, 10 January 2012

The winners of Ludum Dare 22, the latest 48-hour game development marathon, which was held from the 16th of December until the 19th have been revealed.

717 games were submitted to the main 48-hour competition with the game theme being Alone, some of them we checked here, and a further 174 were made for the more relaxed, 72-hour jam. Participants who submitted a game have been given 3 weeks to play and rate games created by their peers, and the results were tallied.

The big winner of the traditional 48 hour competition, is Frostbite from Brazilian studio MiniBoss's co-founder, Pedro Medeiros; an atmospheric and surprisingly lengthy, side-scrolling ghost-shooter/survival game. Isolated in a guard tower during a blizzard, the aim is to head back to the city and find out whether the ghosts are hallucinations or something else entirely.

In the game you'll need to scavenge for provisions to eat and refill your health bar, while venturing into the cold will drop your body temperature. You'll need to find burning bins or go inside a bunker to stay warm. Download it for free here.

The silver medal went to Abandoned , a gravity-flipping caper aboard an abandoned space station, and Last breath , from deepnight came in third place.

Midas won the Jam competition, which is a lighter version of the competition with some of the rules softened. Designers have 72 hours instead of 48 and are allowed to collaborate and use assets they have designed previously. In Midas blocks turn to gold when the greedy-beard touches them, unless he can first neutralise his powers by touching a blue block. The game's goal is to help Midas reunite with his daughter without turning her to gold.

You can see the Top 50 entries into the main Ludum Dare competition here and the same for the Jam event here . The next Ludum Dare will start in April. The 23rd edition of the competition will actually be the 10th anniversary of Ludum Dare. "Yes, we've been doing these silly events for 10 years now!" writes Ludum Dare-runner Mike Kasprzak.
