Whether you love it or love to hate it (I'm looking at you Battlefield fanboys), the latest Call of Duty game, Modern Warfare 3 has the spotlight and probably won't let it go for some time. So let's talk about it for a minute.
Developed by a crippled Infinity Ward and the team at Sledgehammer Game, the uber-hyped and excessively-advertised CoD: MW3 has shattered all records and made no less than $775 million in the first five days since its release last week, dwarfing the $650 million made by its predecessor, Black Ops.
On its launch day Modern Warfare 3 sold over 6.5 million copies and saw 7 million multiplayer hours being logged in on Xbox Live by 3.3 million unique users. Sony didn’t give out any specific figure but said the game has reached a record number of simultaneous players.
In terms of review scores, Activision’s shooter has done pretty well, especially on consoles. The Metacritic scores for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are 89 and 88, respectively, while the PC edition got an 81. The user scores are much, much lower (between 2 and 3.2) but that’s to be expected since this is a very polarizing title.
At the Video Game Awards 2011 set for December 10, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is nominated in two categories - Best Shooter and Best Multiplayer. So, fancy a game?
