After two years in the making, the highly anticipated indie remake of the acclaimed experimental "ghost story" Dear Esther is set to arrive on Steam in February, 14th for $9.99.
Dear Esther was created by Dan Pinchbeck,a researcher based at the University of Portsmouth in 2007, as part of a project funded by the Arts &Humanities Research Council to explore experimental game play and storytelling. A year later it launched as a Source mod for Half Life 2, and in 2009 it was picked up by game artist, Robert Briscoe, for a complete overhaul of the visuals and level design.
In the game, players will try to uncover the mystery of a remote and desolate island somewhere in the outer Hebrides, how they got there, and who they are. Fragments of story will be randomly uncovered, and it is up to the player to figure out if what they are seeing is real, or if it’s an illusion. Along the way, they will try to find out who Esther is, and why she chose to summon you to the island.
According to the press release a page for Dear Esther including system specifications will arrive on Steam in the very near future along with a shiny new trailer.
