The next Batman game is called Batman: Arkham Origins, and it’ll be out October 25 for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC. It’s a prequel to Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. Rocksteady Studios, the developer behind the critically-acclaimed first two has passed the torch to Warner Bros. Montreal who is now making the game and brought in creative director Eric Holmes, who worked as lead designer on open-world superhero games The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Prototype.

The game’s plot involves eight of the world’s deadliest assassins, including Deathstroke, coming to Gotham City on Christmas Eve to dispose of Batman. What we also know is that the game will use Rocksteady’s version of the modified Unreal engine “to capture the look and feel of the Arkhamverse.”

“Batman: Arkham is a huge triple-A videogame franchise and we are delighted to expand the experience with Batman: Arkham Origins,” said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.  “WB Games Montréal has an incredibly talented team building upon Rocksteady’s award-winning gameplay and technology to deliver a deep, immersive, quality experience fans will love.”

“WB Games Montréal is honoured to have the opportunity to create Batman: Arkham Origins, a new chapter in this amazing franchise” said Reid Schneider, Vice President and Executive Producer, WB Games Montréal.  “We are huge fans of the franchise and are committed to creating an experience that offers players more of what they love, as well as the chance to play as a younger Batman within a fresh storyline and expanded world.”

A handheld spin-off called Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate was also announced for 3DS and Vita. It will be a 2.5-D Metroid-style game developed by Armature Studios, the development house led by ex-Retro staffers who worked on Metroid Prime.
